Abstract Synopsis
- Homeostasis is defined as a system's ability to maintain a constant output variable despite changes in an input variable, and it is crucial for the regulation of biological systems.
- The paper distinguishes between perfect homeostasis (where the output's derivative with respect to input is zero) and infinitesimal homeostasis (where this is true at a specific point), introducing singularity theory to better understand homeostasis in complex systems.
- The study presents a classification of three-node input-output networks, identifying 13 distinct configurations and three primary mechanisms (structural homeostasis, Haldane homeostasis, and null-degradation homeostasis) that achieve infinitesimal homeostasis.
