Abstract Synopsis

  • People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are more likely to experience traumatic events, especially social victimization, and show a higher rate of PTSD (32%) compared to typical adults (4%).
  • Individuals with ASD, particularly females, report more PTSD symptoms such as re-experiencing and physiological arousal, and tend to experience more negative social events as their most distressing trauma.
  • Those with ASD who also show signs of PTSD tend to have poorer social skills, highlighting a link between trauma, PTSD symptoms, and social challenges in this group.
