Abstract Synopsis

  • Baurusuchids were the apex predators in Late Cretaceous ecosystems of southeast Brazil, filling a niche usually occupied by theropod dinosaurs, which were relatively scarce.
  • Researchers used finite element analysis (FEA) to study the skull and jaw structure of these crocodyliforms, revealing their unique adaptations for predation despite having a weaker bite force compared to other carnivores.
  • The biomechanical characteristics of baurusuchids indicate that their predation strategies relied on specialized features like ziphodont teeth and strong neck muscles, which developed due to the unique environmental pressures of their habitat.
