Abstract Synopsis

  • This study investigates whether the root extract of Withania somnifera (also known as Ashwagandha) can be an effective alternative treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), especially given the limitations of current medications, which often have high recurrence rates after stopping.
  • The trial involved 40 patients already on SSRIs who were randomly assigned to receive either the 1g daily root extract or a placebo for six weeks, with anxiety symptoms measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA).
  • Results showed a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms in the group taking the extract compared to the placebo, indicating that Withania somnifera root extract may help decrease GAD symptoms with potentially fewer side effects.
