Abstract Synopsis

  • The research challenges the long-standing belief that nonavian dinosaurs, particularly theropods, were strictly terrestrial, presenting evidence that Spinosaurus aegyptiacus possessed unique tail adaptations for aquatic locomotion.
  • Utilizing robotic models, the study demonstrates that the tail morphology of Spinosaurus provides greater thrust and efficiency in water compared to terrestrial dinosaurs, suggesting an evolutionary trend toward an aquatic lifestyle.
  • The findings imply that some spinosaurids may have adapted to semi-aquatic environments, indicating a broader invasion of aquatic habitats by certain dinosaur groups over millions of years.
