Exploring Modifiable Factors in Depression Risk and Prevention
This conversation features Dr. Joni Coleman discussing depression and how genetics, environment, and trauma influence mental health. The study emphasizes modifiable factors like social support and television viewing as significant in preventing depression. Learn more about the Medical Research Foundation's mission.

Abstract Synopsis
- This study used data from over 100,000 UK Biobank participants to explore a variety of modifiable factors related to the prevention of depression.
- Researchers identified 106 factors across lifestyle, social, and environmental domains and focused on individuals at risk for depression through genetic and life event assessments.
- They found that while many factors were linked to depression, only a few, like social support and television watching, had strong causal evidence, highlighting the need for further validation in prevention strategies.
