Abstract Synopsis

  • SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins directly activate the alternative complement pathway, which might contribute to various complications like thrombosis and organ damage in COVID-19 patients.
  • Inhibition of factor D can effectively block this activation, preventing complement-mediated damage, whereas C5 inhibition only partially mitigates the effects.
  • These findings suggest that targeting complement activation could be a potential therapeutic strategy for managing severe COVID-19 symptoms and related conditions.
