What people are saying
Many discussions address the notable experiment regarding students analyzing data related to people's BMI and daily steps. For example, one comment mentions, 'Students who were given a hypothesis to test were more likely to miss a gorilla in dataviz,' while another highlights, 'Having a hypothesis can even be a liability - blinding you from discovery.' The choice of words like 'blinding' and 'missing the gorilla' reflects a critical tone towards traditional hypothesis-driven research and emphasizes the article's proposition that exploratory approaches can yield more discoveries.
The majority of discussions reflect an understanding and acceptance of the article's key message against rigid hypothesis-driven approaches.
Participants express a high level of curiosity, as evidenced by references to the gorilla experiment and its implications for scientific practice.
Many posts delve deeply into the content of the article, incorporating specific examples and research findings that highlight the importance of exploratory data analysis.
The discussions suggest that users perceive the article as having significant implications for the future of research methodologies.
Abstract in brief
- A hypothesis can limit creativity by constraining the range of ideas considered.
- It may lead to confirmation bias, where one only seeks evidence that supports the hypothesis.
- Challenging a hypothesis can open new avenues for exploration and innovation.

Perhaps we could be making more discoveries by exploring more?! To test this, we asked students to test a specific hypothesis with a dataset: is BMI related to the number of steps Other students were just asked to analyze the dataset. @ItaiYanai @nightsciencepod @MartinJLercher “A hypothesis is a liability” is my favourite :-). My own thoughts, in better words! Too many biologists dogmatically insist that hypothesis-driven is the only path to enlightenment. This outdated view was born of necessity: pre-omics, we could only test 1-2 hypotheses at a time.

I remember seeing this paper, we were still in 1st yr of #COVID19 pandemic - don't remember which wave, before vaccines. I loved the title & content, but was busy & forgot to tweet, so doing it now. "A Hypothesis is a liability"
(18) At the end of the day, it was a very fun journey and a good illustration of why it’s important to look at the data and be extremely careful with it (hi, gorilla! https://t.co/BQ5raPgtcM). A useful example from my PhD for my future academic career, ha-ha.
A hypothesis is a liability #MetaScience genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.... Students who were given a hypothesis to test were more likely to miss a gorilla in dataviz because they did fewer exploratory analyses. The study is worth replicating, my guess being it would replicate. 1/

Another example of the importance of developing the habit of always visualizing your data. Out of 33 students asked to analyze this dataset, only 14 discovered the gorilla. https://t.co/fAPjJgkCz8 https://t.co/kdPd9YGYB5
Interesting read
@FattebertJ Reminded me of this editorial, which strangely enough, I found again via Twitter barely 24h ago. https://t.co/FVkIHhQAtW

@DataSciFact Reminds me of this paper, in which participants who were given an a priori hypothesis were less likely to explore the data and find that graphing it showed the picture of a gorilla! https://t.co/aSafLbtRZw https://t.co/lMqbyWOQqk
