Abstract Synopsis
- The study used a special sensor to measure ATP levels inside brain cells of live mice and found that these levels change depending on whether the mouse is awake, in slow-wave sleep, or REM sleep, with the lowest ATP during REM sleep.
- During REM sleep, even though blood flow and energy supply to the brain increase, the ATP inside neurons still drops, implying neurons may be in a negative energy balance at that time.
- When neurons are activated by electrical stimulation, ATP levels decrease while blood flow still increases, suggesting that brain energy supply sometimes doesn't fully match the neurons' energy needs, leading to natural fluctuations in ATP levels.
