Abstract in brief

  • Fungus-growing ants face threats from specialized fungal pathogens like Escovopsis, which attack their fungal gardens using physical and chemical strategies.
  • The ants defend themselves by developing microbiomes on their exoskeletons that include antimicrobial-producing Actinobacteria, creating a complex chemical interactions network.
  • These interactions involve various chemical signals, such as terpenes, alkaloids, and antifungals, that help control pathogens and competing bacteria within the ant's nest environment.]
