Abstract Synopsis

  • The study explores how human-directed play behavior in dogs is linked to their evolutionary background and selective breeding for different functions, revealing that even ancestral dogs showed moderate levels of this behavior.
  • Herding and Sporting breeds tend to display higher levels of human-directed play behavior compared to Nonsporting and Toy breeds, indicating that selective breeding for specific roles has shaped this trait.
  • The results suggest that human-directed play was important during the early domestication of dogs and that ongoing artificial selection for particular functions continues to influence this social behavior, strengthening the bond between dogs and humans.
