Abstract Synopsis
- Globalized and industrialized food systems are linked to major health and environmental issues like food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate change, and trade/investment can either hinder or help efforts to improve these systems.
- Current research using health impact assessments shows we know some things—such as how trade influences the spread of unhealthy foods and the pushback against plant-based alternatives—but there are many uncertainties about how trade policies can effectively promote healthier and more sustainable food systems.
- To better address future challenges, the article suggests that increasing transparency, policy flexibility, and public participation in trade and investment decisions could help design a food system that supports human and planetary health more effectively.]
