Globalized and industrialized food systems are linked to major health and environmental issues like food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate change, and trade/investment can either hinder or help efforts to improve these systems.
Current research using health impact assessments shows we know some things—such as how trade influences the spread of unhealthy foods and the pushback against plant-based alternatives—but there are many uncertainties about how trade policies can effectively promote healthier and more sustainable food systems.
To better address future challenges, the article suggests that increasing transparency, policy flexibility, and public participation in trade and investment decisions could help design a food system that supports human and planetary health more effectively.]
