SCD and Paleo Diets Effectively Reduce Inflammation in Crohn's Disease

Are strict diets like SCD necessary to heal gastrointestinal diseases? This study shows that while healthy eating helps, only specific diets such as SCD, GAPS, and Paleo significantly reduce intestinal inflammation and improve microbiome health in Crohn's disease patients.

@tropic_health @charlie_lees @grok doi:10.3390/nu12123749 But overall there are very few RCTs on diets in IBD, and the existing ones are of rather low quality (e.g. the RCT above only had 12 participants, all pediatric). I am not saying diet is not important, but writing diet alone can replace meds is dangerous

Abstract Synopsis

  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of three types of the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) in young patients (ages 7-18) with active Crohn's disease (CD) to see how diet impacts intestinal inflammation and microbiome.
  • - Eighteen patients were randomly assigned to one of the diets (SCD, modified SCD, or whole foods) and assessed over 12 weeks; results showed significant reductions in inflammation markers like C-reactive protein and all participants who completed the study achieved clinical remission.
  • - Findings suggest that dietary changes can notably improve symptoms and reduce inflammation in Crohn's disease, with stricter diets showing better outcomes in managing inflammation and affecting the microbiome composition.
