Abstract in brief
Ibogaine is a psychedelic alkaloid that shows promise in treating various substance use disorders by altering addiction-related brain circuitry, but it has safety concerns due to toxicity and potential heart issues.
Researchers have engineered a safer version of ibogaine called tabernanthalog, which is water-soluble, non-hallucinogenic, and non-toxic while preserving therapeutic effects.
In animal studies, tabernanthalog promoted neural plasticity and reduced addictive behaviors, suggesting it could be a viable treatment option for addiction and depression.

@kwanalexc @UBoltaev @SamesLab After reading this, it is interesting to take another look at many of the recent psychedelic studies, e.g. "A non-hallucinogenic psychedelic analogue with therapeutic potential" and "Psychedelics Promote Neuroplasticity Through Activation of Intracellular 5-HT2A Receptors".
@chrisrudge An analogue to showed increased spine formation in mice (https://t.co/yLDQ7Cqy9M) and there was some lower-resolution evidence of increased synaptic formation in pig (https://t.co/w2nNbChml4), but this is first molecular-level resolution, long-term results for mice, I think.
