Abstract in brief

  • The discovery of at least two subadult and one adult sabertoothed cat in Ecuador provides rare insights into their life history, suggesting a catastrophic event caused their death.
  • The presence of a 'P' in the subadult teeth indicates familial relationship, likely siblings, and the adult was probably their mother, showing evidence of prolonged parental care.
  • Compared to other big cats, this sabertoothed cat had a unique growth pattern; it grew at a rate similar to tigers but had an extended growth period like lions.

Extinct predator kittens grew as fast as today's #tigers, but spend relatively long time (about 2 years) with their mother, similar to living #lions.
