Abstract Synopsis
- Confirmation bias, which is the tendency to favor information that supports our existing beliefs, can be useful if people have good metacognition—meaning they are aware of their own thinking processes and can adjust when necessary.
- The study shows that when individuals can recognize when they are wrong and seek new evidence, confirmation bias doesn't necessarily harm decision-making and may even improve it compared to unbiased thinking.
- Improving people's metacognitive skills might help reduce the negative impacts of confirmation bias, especially in areas like political polarization, by encouraging more balanced information processing.]
