Many comments emphasize the study's finding that the benefits of microdosing are largely explained by placebo effects, with phrases like 'placebo-controlled' and 'benefits can be explained by the placebo.' The tone is often skeptical, with words like 'probably' and 'no significant difference,' indicating a critical perspective on the potential pharmacological effects of microdosing, which diminishes the perceived impact of previous anecdotal claims.
AgreementStrong disagreement
The majority of discussions highlight that microdosing's benefits are likely due to placebo effects, reflecting strong disagreement with claims of pharmacological benefits.
InterestModerate interest
While the topic of microdosing draws some curiosity, many discussions focus on the methodological flaws and placebo explanations, indicating moderate interest.
EngagementModerate engagement
Several comments reference specific studies, methodologies, and effects, showing some depth in engagement, but overall it remains somewhat superficial or skeptical.
ImpactLow impact
The prevailing consensus suggests that this study challenges previous positive claims about microdosing, thus exerting a significant impact on the field and public perceptions.
Abstract in brief
The study involved 191 participants in a selfblinding citizen science project to investigate the effects of psychedelic microdosing, which traditionally lacks clinical control, finding improvements in psychological outcomes but no significant differences between microdose and placebo groups.
Both groups showed improvements, indicating that perceived benefits of microdosing might be largely due to the placebo effect rather than actual drug effects; this was supported by participants breaking blind, which affected the results.
Small but significant differences in mood, energy, creativity, and anxiety were observed, but these could be explained by participants guessing their treatment, suggesting the reported benefits of microdosing may not be solely due to the drug itself.]
Clever study design: recruit people who are already purchasing psychedelic drugs on the black market and give them a self-blinding protocol to get a placebo controlled study. The results: microdosing likely has no pharmacological benefits. https://t.co/F83tcikW3u https://t.co/To4P42qEbT

If microdose is defined as subperceptual, then probably only placebo. But one can also microdose superperceptually, in which case effect is possible. But I do agree that the main potential is with high doses & deep experiences.
Essentially the participants blinded themselves, and followed a placebo-controlled regime for 4 weeks. All psychological outcomes improved, in *both* groups - the microdosers and the placebo group.

@stillnessschool @MicrodoseHQ Anecdotal reports suggest that microdosing by psilocybin enhances well-being and cognition; however, such accounts are potentially biased by the placebo effect. There's a great recent study about this https://t.co/AyUlA6bMqE
This study follows the self-blinding design of @RCarhartHarris et al. https://t.co/QZPjNBeJ6h , but with closer control so we are pretty sure the blind was never broken. We also asked subjects if they could guess the conditions, and will analyse those separately.
The largest study ever conducted on psychedelics showed the subjective effects of microdosing (LSD or psilocybin) is the same as placebo. There are other studies that show the same. It’s all about the full dose
