The overall sentiment includes referencing foundational concepts like Warburg's effect, with examples such as the role of glycolysis in cancer cells and immune responses, showing both support and debate. The tone varies from scientific detail to skepticism, reflecting an engaged but critical perception of glycolysis’s significance in biology and medicine.
There is mixed support and skepticism about the role and significance of glycolysis, with some posts referencing Warburg's findings while others questioning their applicability or interpretation.
Moderate interest is evident, as many discussions delve into biochemical mechanisms, disease implications, and research studies, reducing disinterest but not showing enthusiastic engagement.
Posts frequently reference specific pathways, molecular mechanisms, and experimental results, indicating a fair level of engagement with the material.
Several discussions mention potential therapeutic targets and the importance of glycolysis in diseases like cancer, suggesting a moderate perceived impact on health sciences.
Abstract in brief
- Glycolysis is a process where glucose, a simple sugar, is broken down into smaller molecules to produce energy for the cell.
- It occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell and involves a series of enzyme-driven steps that convert glucose into two molecules of pyruvate.
- The process results in the production of ATP (energy) and NADH, which are essential for cell function and energy transfer.]

This is not just metabolic. It’s also epigenetic. AMPK suppresses the co-activator PCAF, reducing histone acetylation on glycolysis genes while opening genes for OXPHOS.
The key checkpoint is the A2A receptor - AMPK pathway. AMPK acts as an energy sensor. When activated, it reprograms Th17 cells away from glycolysis and toward OXPHOS.
When Th17 cells rely on aerobic glycolysis, they become pathogenic. When they shift to oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in mitochondria, they stay non-pathogenic.

Brain endothelial HIF-1α exacerbates diabetes-associated cognitive impairment by accelerating glycolysis-driven lactate production https://t.co/vTluVEpXnV
Cancer metabolism is driven by gene mutations. Signals from PI3K, Akt, mTOR, and HIF-1α push cells toward glycolysis. Mitochondria often become fragmented and dysfunctional but are still essential for cancer growth.
Even though glycolysis is less efficient, cancer cells often increase glycolysis to high levels. They still use mitochondria, just differently - mostly for biosynthesis and supporting altered growth patterns.
Let’s look at how this system changes in disease. First: cancer. Many cancer cells use glycolysis even when oxygen is available. This is called the Warburg effect.
One glucose molecule can yield ~30–36 ATP through this process. In contrast, glycolysis alone (without mitochondria) makes only ~2 ATP per glucose. So mitochondria are far more efficient under normal oxygen conditions.
In healthy cells, mitochondria make most of the cell’s energy (ATP) through a process called oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). This happens after glucose is broken down into pyruvate through glycolysis.
