Abstract Synopsis
- The study explored how humans can learn to control a robotic thumb (called the Third Thumb) over five days, improving their motor skills, coordination, and sense of embodiment, even under challenging conditions like high cognitive load or limited vision.
- Training with the robotic thumb altered the brain's representation of the biological hand, weakening natural hand movement patterns and causing a mild decline in the brain's ability to distinguish the augmented hand's movements, indicating neural plasticity.
- Despite successful control and increased embodiment, these findings highlight that robotic augmentation can lead to changes in brain and body integration, which are important to consider for future development of augmentation technologies.
