Abstract Synopsis
- Artificial sweeteners (AS) are synthetic sugar substitutes widely used in diets, but recent research links their consumption to health risks like metabolic issues and disruptions in gut microbiota.
- The study investigated how common AS such as saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame influence the pathogenic behavior of gut bacteria and their interactions with intestinal cells using lab models.
- Results showed that AS can increase bacterial biofilm formation and enhance their ability to adhere to, invade, and harm intestinal cells, but these negative effects can be blocked by zinc sulphate, highlighting potential ways to mitigate the harmful impacts of AS on gut health.
