Abstract Synopsis
- High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves short bursts of intense exercise followed by rest periods, offering similar or greater health benefits compared to traditional moderate exercise, and is often more enjoyable.
- Despite variations in definitions, HIIT typically pushes individuals to near-maximal effort (about 90% of their maximum oxygen use), leading to significant improvements in aerobic capacity, endurance, and metabolic health in diverse populations.
- The review traces the history of HIIT from the 1920s to today and explains how this training induces physiological changes by increasing exercise capacity and overall health, making it a practical option especially for those with limited time for exercise.
