Abstract Synopsis

  • Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are common in bacteria, but distinguishing which ones are high-risk is crucial for public health.
  • The study developed a framework to assess ARG risk based on human association, gene mobility, and pathogenicity, identifying 3.6% of ARGs as the most concerning.
  • The framework classified 73 'current threat' ARG families, many of which align with high-risk genes identified by the WHO, and highlighted the potential risks of 'future threat' ARGs emerging from non-pathogens, particularly in hospital settings.
