Abstract Synopsis
- The systematic review examined published estimates of research and development (R&D) costs for bringing a new drug to market, finding a wide range from $161 million to $454 billion, with higher costs for cancer drugs.
- The study assessed the quality of these cost estimates based on how the data were collected, considered variability sources, and included cost components, but found no improvement in estimate reliability over time.
- Overall, the review highlights that R&D costs are highly uncertain and there is no definitive or universally accepted average cost for developing a new drug.]
