Abstract in brief
- This study reports on the outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) procedures for treating Barrett's esophagus neoplasia in the Netherlands, involving 130 complete resections with high success rates, especially for high-grade dysplasia and early-stage esophageal cancer.
- Most en bloc and R0 resections showed excellent results, but R1 resections (where margins still contain cancer) had a higher chance of residual disease; however, many patients with R1 resections who were followed up had no residual tumor or only a low recurrence rate, suggesting that additional factors like follow-up endoscopy could help determine the need for further surgery.
- Overall, ESD appears to be a safe and effective method for removing bulky and early esophageal cancers, with the potential for good long-term outcomes when combined with careful follow-up, especially in cases with R1 margins.]
