Abstract Synopsis
- The study examined how alcohol and other substance use disorders (SUDs) impact mortality rates among people with various eating disorders, finding that those with combined SUDs and eating disorders face a significantly higher risk of death.
- Patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or unspecified eating disorders who abused alcohol or cannabis had notably increased mortality risks, with hazard ratios indicating more than double or even triple the risk compared to similar patients without SUDs.
- While control subjects with SUDs also had higher mortality risks than those without SUDs, the increase was much more pronounced in patients with eating disorders, suggesting that SUDs add an extra risk factor for mortality in this group.]
