Most genes in E. coli respond to a single regulatory factor, but about 5% have dual factor preferences, especially for factors that control housekeeping functions and stress responses.
The study shows that gene activation levels are quite similar during stationary growth and other phases, and there is a quantitative link between the gene's promoter sequence and how strongly it responds to changes in factor levels.
They developed and validated a sequence-based model that predicts gene sensitivity during different growth phases and stresses, suggesting that these promoter variants could be used to design synthetic gene circuits with predictable responses.]
