Abstract Synopsis

  • The study systematically reviewed and analyzed existing research to understand how different levels of physical activity relate to the risk of developing depression, finding that increased activity generally reduces depression risk.
  • The meta-analysis included 15 prospective studies with over 191,000 participants, revealing an inverse curvilinear relationship—meaning the greatest mental health benefits are observed when increasing activity from very low to moderate levels.
  • Despite large variability among study results, the overall evidence suggests that engaging in even half of the recommended physical activity volume may significantly lower the risk of depression.
