AI synopsis
What people are saying
The collection reads as an ongoing, multi-voiced discussion about theories of consciousness, largely centered on evaluating competing frameworks (HOT, GNWT, IIT, RP, PP, Orch-OR, etc.), and on how to test and compare them via adversarial collaborations and empirical work. The tone alternates between enthusiastic advocacy for certain theories, skeptical critiques, and calls for open science practices. Word choices range from technical (IIT, GNWT, HOT, RP) to combative (calling some theories “crazy” or “pseudo-science”), reflecting a lively but contentious discourse. The context—promotional posts for preprints, conferences, and papers—signals an active, collaborative field prioritizing empirical validation, while some posts inject personal opinions or speculative links to broader philosophical debates. Overall, the discussions exemplify both enthusiasm for progress and friction over methodological and interpretive issues in consciousness research.
Overall neutral to slightly positive; many posts promote or defend various theories but few reach clear consensus or agreement with a single stance.
Posts show sustained interest with frequent mentions, links, and calls to discuss and collaborate.
Moderate to high engagement in the form of endorsements, critiques, and retweets; some dismissive or provocative comments exist but are not predominant.
Unclear practical impact; discussions advance ideas and collaborations but no direct real-world change is evident.
Abstract in brief
- Recent advances have led to the development of various theories about the biological and physical basis of consciousness, which are essential for guiding research, interpreting data, and designing experiments.
- The article reviews four main theories—higher-order theories, global workspace, reentry and predictive processing, and integrated information theory—highlighting their key ideas, neurobiological assumptions, and supporting evidence to clarify how they differ and relate.
- To achieve a better understanding of consciousness, the text suggests that developing and testing these theories through iterative comparison and empirical validation is crucial, promising progress in unraveling this complex phenomenon.

Yes, something completely different is required to solve the hard problem. @davidchalmers42 once said theories of consciousness weren’t crazy enough. But then he said Orch OR was too crazy. I do think this line of argument is important. Mental stuff seems to cause physical stuff (reports), (and vice versa!) and it seems our theories of consciousness should account for this. One way to do so is to say consciousness is just a weakly emergent physical phenomenon, and so not fundamental.
I think this question is basically devastating to many theories of consciousness. (Its well known to defeat epiphenomenalism, & I don't see how QRI Andres's anti-computationalism can cope with it either, eg)

Are there existing theories that explain the subjective aspect of consciousness (“qualia”)? To my understanding most “theories of consciousness” don’t even make an attempt to do so (either aiming to explain other aspects of consciousness, or claiming that qualia doesn’t “really” exist, etc)
I think empirical experiment can provide evidence of consciousness even if not proof, since the most plausible philosophical theories of consciousness say that it coincides with the presence of certain mechanisms. If this were not so, then I could not even acquire evidence that you are conscious.

What an incredible resource. Robert Kuhn has collated a comprehensive and up-to-date list of the theories of consciousness. Over 300. The expansion of theories, rather than a reduction occurring in the light of scientific progress, is interesting in itself. loc.closertotruth.com

A family friend sent me this Scientific American article on testing the different theories of consciousness at the end of April, & I finally get to reading it today. Why have I gotten so far behind and so unresponsive? What a messy, murky time it has been. www.scientificamerican.com/article/wher...

Here's the problem: The big theories of consciousness point to different brain areas... but they all have supporting scientific evidence. This shouldn't be possible if they're mutually exclusive. It's a huge scientific #paradox.

...the brain itself is comprised of many parts that are often in competition, theories of consciousness must battle it out. I would just add that the Hard Problem is the bully in the playground. Taming dualism - explaining it away - exposing its illusionism - can help clear the air.

As far as where I’m coming from: I don’t think there’s conscious AI today. But I don’t know there isn’t, because our theories of consciousness are not sufficiently well developed to be able to make a definitive statement. Nor do we understand deep networks well enough.
Philosopher and cognitive scientist David Chalmers argued in a 2023 article…that LLMs resemble human minds in their outputs but lack certain hallmarks that most theories of consciousness demand: temporal continuity, a mental space that binds perception to memory, and a single, goal-directed agency
How do you give a hat tip to David Chalmers' "Could a Large Language Model be Conscious?" paper in this article and then ignore the fact that he specifically says that self-reports of consciousness from LLMs are "not compelling"?!? It's practically the first thing he discusses!
The ConCrit Framework: Critical Brain Dynamics as a Unifying Mechanistic Framework for Theories of Consciousness: https://osf.io/3t49y
A major open science study comparing leading consciousness theories found neural evidence supporting some predictions but challenging core claims of both, highlighting the need for rigorous, collaborative research to refine theories of consciousness.

Aya received a NIH K99/R00 to lead the development of clinical tools to predict impaired consciousness during seizures. She is also co-leading a multisite adversarial collaboration testing competing theories of consciousness—Global Neuronal Workspace Theory and Integrated Information Theory. [4/5]
God theories of consciousness are the worst
As well as, more generally, supporting Global Workspace Theories of consciousness. And here's a paper that shows a scrambling of brainwaves after loss of consciousness. That would disrupt the meta cortical ensembles posited by Higher-Order and Global Workspace Theories. doi.org/10.1016/j.ce...
There are no theories of consciousness. There are as yet no hypotheses. Right now, we are speculating about potential paths of exploration which might lead to a hypothesis. It’s an interesting time. But anyone promising more than that is selling snake oil.
An adversarial test between the two most popular and accepted theories of consciousness was recently published in Nature. Given its inconclusive results, perhaps it's time to explore theories once considered fringe or unconventional.../1 #complexitycat
Regarding all the theories of consciousness, and metacognition, where does everyone stand on using confidence rating in decision-making experiments?
