This collection reflects a nuanced debate around the article, with some posts emphasizing the strong evidence for zoonotic origins, such as references to genetic tracing and studies supporting market spillover, while others highlight flaws, corrections, or alternative hypotheses involving multiple virus introductions. Words like 'flawed,' 'correction,' and 'discredited' indicate skepticism, whereas mentions of 'evidence' and 'support' suggest support, demonstrating the mixed sentiment and critical engagement across the discussions.
AgreementNeither agree nor disagree
Discussions are divided; some posts support the conclusions but many criticize flaws or suggest alternative origins, indicating a neutral overall stance.
InterestModerate interest
The discussions are somewhat engaged, focusing on the scientific validity and controversy surrounding the research.
EngagementModerate engagement
Posts involve critique, references to corrections, and debates over methodology, showing moderate depth of involvement.
ImpactModerate impact
The topic influences ongoing scientific debates and scrutiny, but the disagreement and corrections limit immediate broad impact.
Abstract in brief
Understanding the origins of pandemics is crucial for their prevention, and analysis of SARS-CoV-2 genomic diversity early in the COVID-19 pandemic revealed two main viral lineages: A and B.
Research indicates that these lineages resulted from at least two distinct cross-species transmission events, with lineage B making the initial leap to humans around November 18, 2019.
The findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 did not spread widely among humans before November 2019, underscoring a very short time frame between its introduction to humans and the onset of reported COVID-19 cases.

Did you know, that the scientifically agreed upon earliest lineage of SARS-CoV-2 'A' was not responsible for a single human infection at the Huanan market?
Every single one was of Lineage B, meaning it is impossible for the market to be the origin.

The genetic evidence is very clear that the Covid virus emerged from wildlife, no one serious thinks that lab leak theories are plausible.
Follow evidence not ideologies.

But after exposure of a coding bug, the statistical strength of their claims deflated to just a notch above “barely worth mentioning”. https://t.co/z5bGaObVHy

Given those conditions under a zoonosis hypothesis, you would expect multiple spillovers to occur, with most of those likely going extinct.
However, we see clear evidence of multiple spillovers having occurred - at a minimum two distinct ones.

Molecular dating requires care and, importantly, paying close attention to sequencing and informatics artifacts.
We did that here and also get ~mid November timing:

@BiophysicsFL Got out of the weeds for awhile.
Does this mean Pekar et. al is refuted? https://t.co/NaZn70RQpk

The BMJ feature should have cited Pekar2022 https://t.co/oRBR7GnlBr at 14.
But Pekar2022 is deeply-flawed.
It had to be corrected due to a coding error; key statistical parameters were downgraded to just a notch above “barely worth mentioning”. https://t.co/z5bGaObnS0

@Sander_vdLinden https://t.co/bhZ0W04XsV should have referred to https://t.co/oRBR7GnlBr at 14.
But this article recently had to be corrected due to a coding bug, weakening its conclusion; a key statistical parameter was downgraded to just a notch above the “barely worth mentioning” category. https://t.co/MRAVbMajoz

@gdemaneuf @acritschristoph As the only real-world support for their model of multiple failed introductions in Wuhan Dec2019, Pekar https://t.co/oRBR7GnlBr cites https://t.co/1moivy61U5 … which describes a completely different situation: 1st-wave lineages knocked out by NPIs in UK 2020.
Dishonest citation. https://t.co/euVBCyAzac

@LongDesertTrain @ryangrim Pekar2022 https://t.co/oRBR7GnlBr argues for market origin, based on a hypothesis of multiple failed introductions to humans in Wuhan Dec2019.
In support, it cites du Plessis2021 https://t.co/1moivy61U5 … which is about lineage extinctions in UK 2020, attributed to NPIs. https://t.co/LOUfPhS58W

@SolidEvidence @Muller_Lab @SolidEvidence, with respect for all the great work you’ve done, can I urge you to do a critical read of https://t.co/oRBR7GnlBr?
You may be surprised by the shaky logic and modeling behind their widely-publicized conclusions.
Particularly after the correction for coding errors.

@SolidEvidence @Muller_Lab As the only real-world support for the concept of multiple failed introductions in Wuhan, Pekar https://t.co/oRBR7GnlBr cites Plessis https://t.co/K2BXIdOMgB
But Plessis is describing a completely different situation: 1st-wave UK lineages knocked by by NPIs.
A dishonest citation. https://t.co/gHigrC22z6

@Alpharabius870 @DrHermiz @rkaviate @R_H_Ebright Um, no. This is a deliberate distortion of statements.
I'm sorry but no, the A & B lineages had distinct crossovers, I refer you to https://t.co/1iFiQ0UxpR.
A correction has now been posted for the paper "The molecular epidemiology of multiple zoonotic origins of SARS-CoV-2"
The probability of observing a tree structure like early SARS-CoV-2 under a single introduction was updated from 0.5% to 3.1%

the phylogenetics of SARS-CoV-2 point to multiple spillover events in late 2019 (https://doi.org/10.1126/science.abp8337), and the total known genetic diversity of early SC2 lineages has been placed inside Huanan market, alongside susceptible animal hosts (https://zenodo.org/record/7754299) 4/?

argue for two independent transmissions of SARS2 at the Hunan Market ~one week apart

this is a different story to SARS-CoV-2's essentially one-off spillover. The genetic data support that SC2 was introduced in humans in 2 spillover events, BUT these 2 events happened at almost the same time from a single host population source: https://t.co/GndzIbFKeN
