Abstract Synopsis
- This study uses live-cell microscopy to visualize how conjugative plasmids transfer between E. coli bacteria in real time, revealing that the process involves the rapid and efficient movement of plasmid DNA in single-stranded form, which is then quickly converted into double-stranded DNA.
- The conversion from ssDNA to dsDNA controls when certain plasmid genes are expressed, with early genes being transcribed right after entry of the ssDNA into the recipient cell, and later genes becoming active once the DNA is double-stranded.
