We have described about twenty species of sauropods in the Iberian Peninsula; it's one of the most abundant dinosaur groups here. One of the latest additions to the list is Garumbatitan, a huge somphospondyl that may have grown to over 20 m in length

Abstract in brief
- Sauropods were the largest dinosaurs ever, surpassing the size of the largest land mammals, with some necks over 14 meters long.
- Their body structure features a long horizontal neck, a relatively small head, and a massive trunk supported by four sturdy legs.
- The hind legs supported most of their weight, with unique bone adaptations in their feet and a long tail that helped balance their massive bodies during movement.

My wife is now measuring Sauropods by about how many Aerial Gundams they are equal to. Americans will use anything but the metric system
Well okay it's a big dinosaur if you like, lay it down on the ground. A lot of big sauropods could be like 30m long.
And Sauropods, ofc.
We talk about all this and a lot more (we get way more into sauropods and sauropodomorphs and how rapidly they grew, when sauropods got big, theropod growth strategies, and even talk about the duck-billed hadrosaurs) in episode 486 of our podcast, “How Dinosaurs Got So Big”
If it’s height, the tallest known sauropod may be Sauroposeidon, because it could probably raise its head up to 59 ft (18 m) above the ground Now even though the sauropods were the biggest, other dinosaurs grew to be very large too
How big were the biggest dinosaurs (and how did they get so big)? We’ll start with the obvious big dinos: the large, heavy, four-legged animals with columnar legs, known for their long necks and long tails (a.k.a. the sauropods)
Stemaur and Saunotitan are based on Japanese hot springs and saunas. They are also based on Sauropods such Apatosaurus, Shunosaurus, and the concept of Brontosmash. Of which is a theory of how sauropods could have fought. (Credit to Mark Witton for the 2nd image and XtinctDesign for the 3rd.)
But the Waskow & Sander study was in a Camarasaurus, and while I've followed this methodology in several diplodocoid studies, is this a 'rule' for all sauropods?
Sauropods are in fact lower density than alligators or elephants. But if water was up to their chests, they would have had no problem moving through it. Up to the shoulder & they could have floated at one end, with only front legs touching, thanks to their center of buoyancy being behind the CM.
Sauropods are less dense than water, making them buoyant. Too buoyant to be stable unsupported. They'd tip! Consider other animals that passively float: elephants, alligators, witches, very small rocks! They have densities very close to that of water, letting them remain mostly submerged.
Ah yes, the sauropods, well known for being skinny creatures.

Friggin' sauropods...
Does anyone actually believe this kind of utter nonsense is actually going to change the world rather than just enshittify it?
Or it could be a sign of an extinction event. Caused by competition from Ornithischian (bird hipped) herbivores. Sauropods were saurischian (lizard hipped) dinosaurs. Unfortunately we just don’t know what caused this gap. The end of the hiatus came when the titanosaur Alamosaurus emerged.
So what exactly was the Sauropod Hiatus? Well, for about 30 million years sauropods seemed to just disappear from North America. Why? No idea. It could be that not a single species during that time got fossilized, or we simply haven’t found them yet. It could be because of habitat loss.
Provably one for @sophiesaurus98.bsky.social but while going through some boxes in my attic I found my childhood copy of John Man’s Dinosaur, which features some classic Palaeoart, as well as some rather lovely model photography. I might have found the reason I like so much foliage in my displays
@awaiskhan.bsky.social I
Oooh yes becoming the biggest dinosaur there ever was~ Even bigger and heavier than the sauropods~
Before Utetitan, we have ever known of ONE sauropod living in North America at the end of the Cretaceous, Alamosaurus. North America was seriously lacking sauropods at the end of the Cretaceous, and now we potentially have another!! How cool is that?? Very.
Great new paper by Mannion & Moore 2025 on diplodocoid sauropods for #FossilFriday I love their latest phylogeny as it certainly supports the mass extinction of sauropods at the end of the Jurassic that is so well documented in eastern Utah. www.tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10....
It was related to other Carcharodontosaurids like Giganorosaurus and Mapusaurus. Though it was bulkier than both. Tyrannotitan was likely the top predator in its environment and hunted herbivores. Which is likely to have included older, sick or juvenile sauropods.
--I learned that flowering plants weren't abundant until the Cretaceous. Back then, large sauropods were thought to be heavy and awkward, so much so that they required water to support their bodies. We don't think that now, of course, but--
The University of Queensland has this frieze, and several carvings all around the Great Court area.
A newly minted name for Utah's largest dinosaur, Utetitan! Given the amount of time these latest Cret sauropods span, more than one taxon likely. I did not review this manuscript, so let the sauropod researchers weigh in. giw.utahgeology.org/giw/index.ph... @paleontologizing.bsky.social
Majungasaurus: The Cannibal Cannibalism isn't all that rare in nature, but there's only one dinosaur with direct evidence of it. Majungasaurus, a 1te abelisaur from Madagascar. Despite having a taste for its own kind, they specialised in hunting sauropods. Art by Max Bellomio
Or maybe a cute "little" sauropod such as Magyarosaurus, which is among the smallest sauropods and hails from present-day TRANSLYVANIA!
But I thought Schumer's strategy is to wait for MAGA to go away. Maybe it's time for those sauropods to step down?
That's actually only a slight exaggeration from the modern conception of sauropods! Skinny swan necks (and shrink-wrapped skeletons in general) have been out for quite some time.
I opted out of a smoother look based on the size of scales known from Camarasaurus as well as a detailed look at possible integument types from other sauropods. While we do have many impressions from sauropods, most Macronarians preserve varied hexagonal types as seen on this model.
Wait, would this also play into the "Carcharodontosaurids doing hit and runs on sauropods" thing?
I remember reading a paper about how Allosaurus would lunge at Sauropods they chased, wearing them down in time. It reminded me of African Wild Dogs bringing down prey larger than them.
*suddenly a narrator's voice like David Attenborough sounds* "Sauropods are herbivores, which means they can eat all sorts of plants, including trees."
I have no idea, but I want it to be one of the derpy sauropods near the bottom
With tall spines and sails, Amargasaurus has a unique silhouette. These sauropods are known for traveling in herds split by genders into all female and all male herds, only uniting during the breeding season. But every time, the herd is lead by a wise old matriarch. #pathoftitans #realism #dinosaurs
Sauropods are more gamey.
Sauropods?
Sauropods if they were designed by Wayme Barlowe.
Kirk’s Mamenchisaurus stood out to me amongst this book’s parade of boring grey sauropods for being so weird! I loved the mental image of this stiff-necked giant’s head peeking over treetops and couldn’t imagine the neck in any other position. I basically imagined it as a sauropod seesaw. (12/17)
Main points: -Review of basics on sauropod tail clubs would be very useful! -It's not entirely clear to paleoartists which sauropods had clubs & what they looked like -Clubs never depicted as anything other than defense against predators -Clubs never depicted being used as a non-weapon
The above crane-inspired hypothesis is not exactly scientific, just pure paleoartist speculation FYI. But I think these features in sauropods are fascinating & deserve more discussion & depiction. They remind me of the provenance of sails/tall neural spines in Mesozoic Africa
A "review" of #paleoart depictions of sauropods with these clubs to me shows that a review would be a great help. They're almost always depicted as defensive weapons, with Shunosaurus wacking Yangchuanosaurus the most common depiction of these "clubs" in action
For those unfamiliar this is what these clubs look like in various sauropods: that of Shunosaurus is apparently associated w/ 2 osteoderm spikes, & note how narrow that of M. hochuanensis is
They're like therapods trying to be sauropods and theur bodies just end up crazy as a result
A Quarry Worker Felt Strange Bumps While Digging. They Turned Out to Be the Largest Dinosaur Trackway in the U.K.-- The five sets of tracks represent four-legged sauropods and a three-toed carnivore that might have crossed paths on a prehistoric landscape.
Thank you sauropods had the weirdest damn feet
Any paleontologists who see this, I have a question. If macronarian sauropods like Brachiosaurus and Camarasaurus were anatomically incapable of standing on their hind legs, how did they mate? Asking out of curiosity, I’m not one of those insanists that think evolution is fake. Far from it.

@Irritator_Fan @GhostlyUnh1nged I’m no expert but my assumption is because in the initial description of “Saurophaganax”, the material that we now know was from sauropods was likely used back then to distinguish it from Allosaurus fragilis. But since that is now not the case, they likely couldn’t use maximus
only gripe with this movie: 1. sauropods (long neck) did not chew side to side, as seen in the film. thats only in hadrosaurs. 2. velociraptors had feathers and werent that strong. the movie also makes use of their third toe, which they didnt use. https://t.co/KCVyjBJwFU

The field of the dead sauropods I understand is intended to be a visual of condemning the Indominus for its senseless killing. Meanwhile, I'm wondering how on Earth it could possibly kill that many adult sauropods that fast and that close together. It doesn't have a plasma rifle.
Standing under Patagotitan mayorum at the AMNH is mind-blowing; one of the biggest titanosaurs known. Lived ~100 million years ago in Argentina, ~30-40 meters long and ~55-70 tons. Titanosaurs were the late-Cretaceous sauropods—long necks, massive bodies, wide global range. Absolutely incredible!
About 50% or so. Here is a skeletal inage of what we have (white) vs. what we dont (dark grey). The good thing about sauropods is that they're highly pneumatized (their bones are mostly air). Those gaps are unique to species and groups, so we can figure out the difference with related species.

Next we move on to the Sauropods. These were technically the first big offshoot of the ceratopsians. You can see the bodies are stretched out versions of theirs. #Australotitan #Shunosaurus #Brachiosaurus #Brachytrachelopan #Diplodocus #Diamantinasaurus #Amargasaurus 11/X
ok I'm gonna put ♬ that was our wisdom, the reptiles and I ♬ on repeat and read _Thunder Lizards_ for a little while #dinosaurs #sauropods
Giant Dinosaurs Were Riddled With a Devastating Disease, Fossils Show Baurusuchus and sauropods in Brazil's ancient, arid environment. (Vitor Silva/Stocktrek Images/Getty Images) Science Alert has a piece about dinosaurs... sauropods might not have been all that healthy. The animals that lived in…
Sauropods are always an excellent choice.

NEW EPISODE: @conorontology and paleontologist, Dr. Cary Woodruff, have an excellent chat about the Titanosaurs featured in Jurassic World Rebirth and other Sauropods throughout the franchise! Don’t miss it. Listen everywhere podcasts are found!
Six Brazilian sauropod skeletons about 80 million years old from the Vaca Morta site show osteomyelitis lesions with no signs of healing, suggesting a fatal infection. Read more: https://getnews.me/ancient-sauropods-show-evidence-of-deadly-bone-infection/ #sauropods #osteomyelitis #brazil
However, track depth can be misleading. Some sauropod trackways only have manus prints & in the past they were erroneously interpreted as caused by swimming sauropods. In reality this was due to properties of the substrate. More information on that here: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
Tracks attributed to diplodocid sauropods for example tend to have deeper footprints than hand prints, indicating their center of gravity was around the hips. This points in favor of these dinosaurs being able to rear up on their hindlimbs, a much more difficult task for a front-heavy brachiosaur
The perspective & low angle of the sun in the photo make this so useful for an artist. More often than not tracks in #paleoart are featured as part of a larger scene often featuring lots of organisms. This piece by Guilherme Gehr is a good example
So frustrating when papers on fossil trackways have no photos & have the most minimalist, line-drawing aerial view renderings. They're helpful & informative but also give no indication of depth (important!) or the substrate. #paleontology #paleoart #ichnology
