Abstract Synopsis

  • Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) are often underprescribed for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), prompting this study to evaluate new electronic tools for improving prescriptions.
  • The BETTER CARE-HF trial compared the effectiveness of two automated, electronic health record (EHR) tools—one alerting physicians during patient encounters and another sending messages between encounters—against usual care in prescribing MRAs.
  • Results showed that the alert led to significantly higher MRA prescriptions (29.6%) compared to the message (15.6%) and usual care (11.7%), underscoring the value of EHR tools in enhancing the prescription of crucial heart failure treatments.
