Abstract Synopsis

  • The study found that various sleep disturbances, such as very short or long sleep, impaired quality, difficulty falling or staying asleep, unplanned and prolonged napping, snoring, snorting, and breathing cessation, are significantly associated with an increased risk of acute stroke.
  • The research, conducted through the international INTERSTROKE case-control study, analyzed data from nearly 4,500 participants, revealing that sleep issues can be important modifiable risk factors for stroke.
  • Even after adjusting for other risk factors like age, behavior, and health conditions, most sleep disturbances remained strongly linked to higher odds of having a stroke, indicating that improving sleep quality might help reduce stroke risk.]
