Abstract in brief
* The previously believed prevalence gap of ASD between males and females may be smaller than thought, which could contribute to delays in diagnosing women.
* Identifying ASD in women, even when they don't exhibit standard symptoms, is crucial for proper treatment and understanding their social challenges and mental health issues like ADHD and depression.

There are a couple characters in the Big Bang Theory that would probably apply, but I don't think they're canonically diagnosed.

Why is autism in women not even acknowledged in Iran? I want to take a test, but I can’t find a specialist who diagnoses autism in adults. It’s ridiculous.
@NOTbotI @Valkyriedownbad icl autism in women specifically is OFTEN misdiagnosed as bpd so i actually don’t think that’s true. i thought i had bpd for a long time (dsm-5 list was a bingo sheet to me) but it’s autism and ptsd. it’s pretty comparable
@JamesEsses Workplace anxiety support is NOT for avoidance. It’s for incremental exposure to get them used to it.
Tbh, it’s rational to be a bit anxious when your job is not secure.
(IMO much of the anxiety cases come down to undiagnosed autism in women, which is very hard to get).
Iirc, autistics are more likely to develop complications from Covid, perhaps leading to a higher rate of getting tested for Covid. And autistics are more likely to give birth to autistic babies. Did they control for this possibility, given the high rate of unidentified autism in women?
@carmarian @Ton_of_beam @RachelCDailey In addition, systemic issues within NHS MH services have left vast numbers of people without treatment, and have spent the past few decades refusing to diagnose disorders that are seen as "male" (like autism) in women unless they were the most stereotypical presentation possible.
I appreciate the offer — I listened to a Radio 4 programme on autism in women and girls, who tend to be under-diagnosed, due to the assessment being based on male autistic traits and the fact that women and girls tend to mask, self-diagnosed, and had that diagnosis confirmed in 2011.

It was reading an article, possibly a decade ago, about autistic women in the UK that was my "Eureka!" moment. They are way ahead of the US in recognising autism in women.
@Rohanburdened @dysphoratu This is especially important for recognizing autism in women because it is more difficult due to greater masking tendencies, and it has only really been in recent history that gender differences in autism presentation have gained recognition

I've been reading alot lately about autism in women, and the more I read the more I think I might be on the spectrum. I have talked about this with my family, but as usual, my almost 80 years old dad who clearly has autism traits too says "we don't have autism in our family"
it just sucks that the official psychiatrists don’t always recognise that ur autism has more effect on ur life bc u don’t have the “blatant” display, esp. ‘cause autism in women can present differently.
Thinking about autism in women and how few emotions even neurotypical women are allowed to show, and then the layers of masking and socially "improper" expressions in connection to various emotions...
Yeah, we've had one or two doctors suggest while we were growing us that we might have "aspergers" (a term we do not approve of), but never pushed for us to get diagnosed. We never really thought about it until we looked up the symptoms of autism in women and saw a lot of ourself there.

I actually highly recommend you to look into autism in women and how often white medicine diagnoses it falsely as BPD and all the stigma, differences and similarities between it and how the DSM 6 is also very outdated and uhh white. I think you’ll find it interesting
One barrier to understanding autism in women is sexualization of symptoms. As an AuDHD woman, I’ve had many stalkers & sexually harassing & abusive situations with men because (as seen in this video) my “quirks” were sexualized & seen as invitations to things I didn’t consent to.
How about we talk about high-profile people like Patrick McGorry contributing to a culture of dismissal of adhd and autism in women and girls - cf. tinyurl.com/4axh9n2h - thus contributing to poor mental health outcomes and negative impacts on productivity?

But at the same time, I extra-resent someone actually working in medicine for pretending her classic DSM checklist personality of autism in women is just quirky, because that's usually why we don't get diagnosed until we burn out in adulthood.

What kinds of research?
-$2 million to increase training for pediatricians (who generally make less than their counterparts who work on adults);
-$2 million to speed up diagnosis of autism in women & gender-diverse people, which opens access to help for them and their families

I dunno. It's probably more difficult as a woman because the broadly accepted profile for autism in women is different to men (gender binary being fake notwithstanding), and women (cis women at least) go chronically under-diagnosed. But a lot of my closest friends are autistic women/afab nb people.
Mum came home from a charity dinner where they had a talk about autism in women. She has now decided she's autistic.
Meanwhile I'm here like, "Mum! Why are you self-diagnosing with autism when I have a perfectly good armchair diagnosis of adhd for you right here??"
and she was like... no! you just are traumatized, and i was like ok ma'am but then she got trained in autism in women and years later was like, wait i think you might have autism
and I was like >:( i said that
Some autistic people think BPD is autism in women ( are you thinking of getting autism diagnosis)
Although my son had to transition to get autism diagnosis oddly
One lesser known sign of autism in women & girls is an overactive inner fantasy world. Sometimes I forget about that one ... & then someone will do smth simple like view my tiktok profile & I'll make up a whole what if about us spending the rest of our lives together, in the space of like 17 sec.
Five little-known signs of autism in women --

And also, is there any relation between autism in women and being gender non-conforming?
I have the impression that autistic women tend to not be the most feminine, but that’s because I’ve never seen a super feminine autistic woman.
Truth is I have never interacted much with any autists, tbh!
Oh! Well congratulations on starting your journey- if I can, I totally recommend the autism in women subreddit, the ladies with 'tism in my life have found it really affirming and helpful!
AI research is famously autistic— but autism in women can look different: intense daydreaming, an obsession with celebrities, or a fixation with female-coded activities like makeup/beauty. It’s socially masked and not visible to the untrained eye.
on one hand, i do agree awareness (especially for autism in women) contributes to the higher diagnostic rate, but also that the autism spectrum in itself is an imperfect way to look at it, because how the dmv5 lumps so many things together to now be called autism and blur experiences
Learning more about AuDHD and autism in women is really enlightening.
I had been misdiagnosed for well over 28 years. They said it was just ADHD/Bipolar Disorder w/ Manic Depression. Definitely wasn't that.
I am happy I got properly diagnosed last year. So many are unable to.

I wasn't aware of that being a complicating factor! Autism in women is so much less focused on and less well studied than autism in men so things like that don't get mentioned as frequently as it should be, at least in the literature I've read.
I hate how autism in women only seems to be acceptable if it’s social anxiety + sensory issues.
The moment you say you struggle with empathy or bluntness you’re the devil
It was my multiple comorbidities that had my new doctor pulling out her "autism in women" slides. I haven't seen the need for formal dx because ADHD and anxiety have for me always been more disabling issues. My mirroring is top-notch - fine from an ASD standpoint as long as I get decompression time.
