Abstract Synopsis

  • This meta-analysis reviewed 90 clinical trials with over 72,000 participants to examine how different doses of omega-3 fatty acids affect blood lipid levels, especially in relation to heart disease risk.
  • The study found that the relationship between omega-3 intake and blood lipids, like HDL and LDL cholesterol, is mostly nonlinear, but for triglycerides and non-HDL cholesterol, higher omega-3 intake tends to linearly decrease these fats, especially in people with high cholesterol or obesity.
  • The results suggest that taking around 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids daily can effectively lower triglycerides and non-HDL cholesterol, which may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.]
