Abstract Synopsis

  • The American Heart Association's scientific statement evaluates whether aggressive lowering of LDL cholesterol affects brain health, particularly in relation to cognitive impairment and dementia.
  • Some studies suggest a potential link between statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) and cognitive issues, but the majority of evidence from observational and randomized trials does not support this claim.
  • The risk of hemorrhagic stroke from statin therapy in patients without prior cerebrovascular disease is considered low, and there is insufficient data on this risk for patients with a history of such strokes, indicating the need for further research.
