Birds are so stable that they can rest and sleep while standing, which may be achieved through a tensegrity system where bones are stabilized by tension in tendons under gravity.
The researchers created a mathematical model of a bird's postural system, initially replacing leg muscles with a single tension cable, which could achieve balance but was not fully stable or biomechanically accurate.
