Abstract Synopsis

  • Nonautistic observers can recognize and reflect the double empathy problem, which includes communication issues between autistic and nonautistic people, when they evaluate interactions.
  • Observers rated interactions between two nonautistic people more positively and perceived less disclosure and social interest in mixed autistic/nonautistic pairs, highlighting the difficulty in understanding autistic experiences.
  • Despite outside perceptions, autistic participants tended to evaluate their interactions more favorably, suggesting that personal contact might lead to more positive views of autistic individuals.
