Abstract Synopsis

  • This meta-analysis studied how common self-reported disordered eating (SRDE) is among athletes worldwide, finding an overall prevalence of around 19-21% and highlighting that factors like being female, older age, and higher BMI increase the risk.
  • The research showed that athletes in Eastern countries and those involved in anaerobic sports or gymnastics tend to have higher rates of disordered eating, while evaluations using certain screening tools, like the three-factor eating questionnaire, reported higher prevalence rates.
  • Factors specific to the sport and demographic characteristics influence eating behaviors, suggesting that about one in five athletes may be at risk of developing disordered eating patterns during their athletic careers.
