Abstract Synopsis

  • The concept of the double empathy problem suggests that difficulties in understanding emotions are mutual between autistic and nonautistic people, challenging the traditional view that autism involves a primary empathic deficit.
  • A study involving 81 adults found that nonautistic participants had lower cognitive empathy accuracy when interpreting autistic narrators' emotional stories, especially for happy and sad emotions, but experienced higher bodily sensations like anger and fear, indicating complex emotional responses.
  • These findings support the double empathy problem and highlight the importance of considering mutual understanding in therapeutic and social interactions with autistic individuals, rather than assuming a one-sided empathic incapacity.]
