Abstract Synopsis

  • Prey animals can detect predators using electroreception, which involves sensing electric fields created by charged predators such as wasps.
  • Research shows that predatory wasps carry electric charges, generating electric fields that trigger defensive behaviors in caterpillars.
  • Caterpillars' sensory hairs (setae) are deflected by these electric fields and respond specifically to the wingbeat frequency of their predators, revealing a new form of predator detection.
