Abstract in brief
- Neonatal seizures are convulsions that occur in newborns, usually within the first month of life.
- They can result from various causes including birth trauma, infections, metabolic disturbances, and brain abnormalities.
- Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent potential long-term neurological damage.

@PeaceLillie330 @Purpleloveor @Tallowtwins @kc_handyman_ However high our maternal mortality rate, “planned home birth is associated with a more than twofold increased risk of perinatal death (1–2 in 1,000) and a threefold increased risk of neonatal seizures or serious neurologic dysfunction (0.4–0.6 in 1,000).” https://t.co/wUZdY3H0QV
@brknsystem @EmbracingTara Home births in the US carry higher risks than hospital births, per ACOG data: perinatal death rate ~2x (1-2/1,000 vs. 0.5/1,000), neonatal seizures 3x. Complications occur in ~15-20% of births; severe ones increase maternal mortality risk by 50-100% without quick hospital access.

Huh. ACOG: double fatality rate from self-selected *low risk* births. The other showing home birth just as safe: Planned hospital birth compared with planned home birth for pregnant women *at low risk of complications*. That last bit is quite important and often left out by home birth advocates.

Enter levetiracetam: Unlike phenobarbital, LEV doesn’t work through GABA! It binds to SV2A (synaptic vesicle protein) → reduces neurotransmitter release. This GABA-independent mechanism makes it increasingly attractive for neonatal seizures.
We give phenobarbital (enhances GABA) to stop neonatal seizures. But if GABA is excitatory, we might be making seizures WORSE! This explains why ~50% of neonatal seizures are refractory to standard meds.
Neonatal Seizures: The GABA Paradox - Thread Why neonatal seizures are so hard to treat - it’s all about the GABA paradox! In adults, GABA = inhibitory . In newborns, GABA = excitatory . Here’s why this changes everything… #Neonatology #NeonatalSeizures

@nyanhial_winine That looks like a simple gesture but for neonates it could indicate scary stuff e.g some typa CNS dysfunction. An UNRESPONSIVE baby that's ROLLING EYES is very frightening he could be having neonatal seizures.
