Abstract in brief

  • Dogs with a large vocabulary of object labels can remember these labels for at least 2 years, highlighting their long-term memory capabilities.
  • Only a small, special group of dogs called Gifted Word Learner (GWL) dogs can learn and retain such large vocabularies, and their mechanisms of learning are not well understood.
  • The study found that five GWL dogs could recall between three and nine object labels after two years, offering insights into how they acquire and retain large vocabularies, which is relevant to understanding language development in both dogs and humans.]
