Abstract in brief
- This study examined how an intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) targeting weight loss impacts cardiac biomarkers (NTproBNP and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T) in people with type 2 diabetes, and how changes in these biomarkers relate to cardiovascular outcomes.
- Results showed that ILI caused a temporary increase in NTproBNP at 1 year, which lessened by 4 years, while it also led to a decrease in hscTnT at both 1 and 4 years. Participants who experienced significant weight loss (over 5%) at 1 year had boosted NTproBNP initially but improved long-term levels of hscTnT, suggesting a potential link between weight loss, biomarker changes, and cardiovascular risk reduction.
- The study highlights that changes in these cardiac biomarkers, particularly increases in NTproBNP and decreases in hscTnT associated with weight loss, are related to the risk of cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle interventions in managing cardiovascular health.]
