Exploring Australopithecus afarensis Running Capabilities and Dark Energy

This week, we examine a study suggesting dark energy may not exist. We also explore how Australopithecus afarensis exhibited bipedal running potential. The speed of this early hominin was slower than modern humans, and its running adaptations were driven by muscle anatomy changes.

Abstract Synopsis

  • Australopithecus afarensis had the potential for bipedal running, but its speed was significantly slower than that of modern humans.
  • Physics simulations showed that the running energy costs for this early hominin aligned with those of similar-sized mammals and birds, indicating efficient, though limited, running capabilities.
  • The evolution of running abilities in Australopithecus was driven more by changes in muscle anatomy and body proportions than by skeletal strength, suggesting adaptations specifically for improved running performance rather than just walking.
