Abstract Synopsis

  • Preclinical studies suggest that GLP-1 receptor agonists may lower alcohol consumption, prompting the need for further research through randomized trials.
  • A phase 2 trial evaluated the effects of weekly semaglutide on alcohol use and cravings in 48 adults with alcohol use disorder over 9 weeks.
  • Results showed that semaglutide reduced the amount of alcohol consumed during a lab task and decreased cravings, although it did not significantly change the average number of drinks per day.
