Abstract Synopsis
- The objective was to evaluate systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on how exercise impacts cognition, memory, and executive function across various age groups.
- The analysis included 133 systematic reviews comprising 2,724 RCTs with over 258,000 participants, highlighting significant improvements in general cognition (SMD=0.42), memory (SMD=0.26), and executive function (SMD=0.24) from exercise, especially in children and those with ADHD.
- The results indicate that both low- to moderate-intensity exercises and short interventions (1-3 months), including exergames, showed the most substantial positive effects, underscoring that exercise is beneficial for cognitive health across all ages.
