この研究では、71～88歳の成人の健康記録を分析し、帯状疱疹ワクチンを接種した人は接種しなかった人よりも今後7年間で認知症を発症する可能性が20％低いことが発見された
この研究では、接種には少し年齢が高い対照群と、接種にちょうどよい年齢の介入群による無作為化試験のようになっている
予防効果には、帯状疱疹の発症による医療経路の変化、水痘帯状疱疹ウイルス（VZV）の再活性化の減少、VZVに依存しない免疫調節効果の3つが考えられる
