Abstract Synopsis

  • There is growing evidence linking red and processed meat consumption to an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), though the strength of this connection is still being debated.
  • A meta-analysis reviewed 60 prospective studies to quantify the association between meat intake and the risk of colon, rectal, and colorectal cancers, finding significant risk increases related to both red and processed meats.
  • The results highlight a strong correlation between high consumption of these meats and higher risks of colon (HR = 1.22), colorectal (HR = 1.15), and rectal cancers (HR = 1.22), supporting dietary recommendations to limit red and processed meat for cancer prevention.
